Notes from first meeting, which was on October 4, 2001

The decisions we reached:

  • we will mount a production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" next summer with a preferred target of the two weekends following 4th of July

  • we will work on putting together a long-term plan / proposal for a community theater group

  • we will try and put together a workshop series on acting with an emphasis on Shakespearean acting through the Parks and Recreation Department in advance of the audition for next summer's production

  • we will look into incorporating as a non-profit

  • Leanne Satter is our Treasurer (Congratulations Leanne!)

Action Items:

  • we'll all look at the Gazebo space and the Meeting House Pond space to decide which is preferable for "A Midsummer Night's Dream," bearing in mind the goose problem at Meeting House Pond

  • we'll all keep brainstorming about a name for the theater group without eliminating any ideas for now (see below for some of the words that got put out to consider and/or associate from)

  • Bob will talk with Mark Cerel, Leanne's friend who is Medfield Town Counsel, about incorporating as a non-profit (see below)

  • Bob will rough out an organizational plan to present to the rest of the group

  • Attendees to last night's meeting will speak with a few other people they think might be interested in joining our early efforts

  • Bob will research bylaws of another community theaters for our consideration

MEETING SUMMARY

Here is a summary of what our group accomplished during a fun and very productive second meeting yesterday (Sunday), which was attended by members Susan Duprey, Bob Eiland, Leanne Satter, Viv Tyndall and Bonnie Zapolin, and by awesomely cute guests Graham Duprey and Dana Zapolin (neither of whom had a vote, but they seemed to like my Thomas the Train).

  • We will seek permission from the Board of Selectmen to stage "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in the Gazebo area for 2 scheduled dates of July 20 and 21, with a rain date / optional third performance on July 27.
  • Susan Duprey and Bob Eiland were named Co-Presidents, Viv Tyndall was named Recording Secretary, and Bonnie Zapolin was named Membership Director. You'll recall Leanne is Treasurer. We still have other officer positions to fill (Program, Technical, Development and Education/Outreach), but chose not to do so without the remaining members present.
  • We will ask Jean Robison, who within her vast stage-related experience has been teaching theatrical arts, to assume the role of Education / Outreach Director.
  • We entertained a large list of names for the theater group, both from the last meeting and from new ones, and whittled the list down to three. See below for more on this, and for voting instructions.
  • Leanne has received the support from her husband Steve, who runs Creative Video and Design Productions (soon to be Avimedia), to develop a logo for us based on the name we choose.

NEXT MEETING'S AGENDA

  • Working session for PR and fund raising
  • Suggestions for changes in the first draft of the Organization Plan Bob did (everyone not at the meeting will be sent copies of this and other materials)
  • Suggestions for how to adapt bylaws Bob researched into our own
  • Starting the search for inside space for 2002
  • If there's time, we'll all watch the "Waiting for Guffman" DVD (with extras) about a community theater group (If there's not time, we'll schedule a separate time for it)

VOTE FOR OUR NAME

The Three Finalists in alphabetical order for the name of the theater group, and a brief description:

  • Caravan Community Theater of Medfield (CCT) - A caravan suggests the image of a chain of people linked together and moving forward on a journey. We also thought the initials were catchy, and that it could make a cool logo.
  • Gazebo Players of Medfield (GPM)- The gazebo is a Medfield landmark and is the site of our very first production as a group. We thought it would make a cool logo too.
  • Stop River Players of Medfield (SRP) - The Stop River is another Medfield landmark. It runs by Causeway, Noon Hill and South Streets, and is the river that goes under the Causeway Street bridge.

Please email me back with your vote. Please vote for one only. A name must win by at least two votes. If a name only wins by one vote, then we'll have a run-off of the two finalists. If there's a run-off, the one with the most votes, however close, will win.
